Front Row

Buses don’t feature in my life much these days. But for one week every two years, they do.

Unless you’re a big shot or part of a foreign visiting delegation, accessing the Farnborough Air Show means taking the shuttle bus. At best, I’m a medium shot… so bus it is.

I remember bus travel for school. As a 5-year-old, it seemed exotic and slightly intimidating. I always wanted to sit up front and watch the driver at work. By secondary school, the front was for swots. The eldest kids occupied the back row. I was stuck in mid-way no-man’s-land. The bus became something to endure.

More than three decades later, buses are a novelty again. At Farnborough, I always head upstairs and grab the front row. You don’t get anything thrown at the back of your head… nice… and the view is pretty special.

Buses still don’t feature in my life much. But for one week every two years, I’m rather glad they do.
